Bonjour mes chéries! I have a legitimate excuse for belated post: I was prepping for my trip (and on my trip) to Cartagena, Colombia for the past two weeks! The travel diary post and vlog are coming soon (hopefully by Friday) once I clear more space on my laptop for footage. It was such an incredible experience, and I wish I could capture it all.
We’re only a few days away from the end of Cancer season which is sad since the majority of the women in my life are Cancers like my mom, grandma, best friend (HI LINDA!), numerous coworkers, and a handful of relatives. So crack open your spiked seltzers and let’s learn about Cancer and our wounded soldier, the Chiron.
Cancer: June 21 – July 22
Symbol: The Crab
Element: Water
Quality: Cardinal
Color(s): White
Ruling Star: Moon
Greatest Overall Compatibility: Virgo, Scorpio, Taurus
Cancers are arguable the sign that feels the deepest, which makes sense because the Moon is their ruling star. They love hard and are passionately caring for the people around them. Since this is a Cardinal sign, you’ll find that some are bold and take charge, putting their claws to good use whether that’s to dance and have fun or point out what is wrong. Others are more reserved, claws only snapping when they feel attacked or need to attack.
They are the mothers of the zodiac, protective and intuitive to others needs. Like a mom, Cancers like to call the shots, organize, and keep the family unit in line. Their empathetic nature allows them to pick up on emotions around them. Despite their tough exterior, these crabs are incredibly sensitive under their thick armors that help them deal with all the swift scary changes in the world. They’re deeply emotional, mysterious, and protective of themselves and loved ones (especially their mothers). Cancers hold home (like their shells) and family as the utmost highest importance in life. Safety of their home and loved ones is always a priority. However, their shell is a place for them to hide a lot of their identity, causing them to be very reserved and indirect in the way they communicate. They don’t like to reveal too much of themselves and need to feel safe in order to even crack open a little. The downside to being this incredibly sensitive is they’re known for either being the crabby and grouchy OR the big crybabies of the zodiac.
Because they care and love others so fiercely, those born under Cancer have an overwhelming desire to be needed, loved, and appreciated in order to feel secure and fulfilled with a sense of identity. They may need affection more than other signs as they fear abandonment and don’t like to be left alone causing them to struggle when their children leave the nest or if their friends drift apart. This can be fantastic if you’re looking for a friend or life partner who is willing to stick by your side 24/7 and experience life together but not if you need a more independent relationship. If Cancers’ emotional needs aren’t met, they tend to become very brooding and moody and possibly clingy and overbearing. Cancers are also very testy. They’ll approach situations with caution and test the waters, but are highly sensitive to rebuttals. If you attack a Cancer especially after they attack you, Cancers will retreat to their inner shell where they hide until they feel safe.
Cancers’ are occasionally dishonest. They are known to go to extremes and lie in situations to prevent themselves from being left behind or deeply hurt. Being crabs with big claws, they also struggle to let go of the past and often forgive but never forget. When they suffer from remembering pains of long ago, they tend to do it alone searching for safety and comfort in their own little shell. At this time, anything that reminds them of their insecurities will cause them to snap their claws at you and retreat further back.
If you have any Cancers in your life, you’ll notice they’re very sentimental. Not only do they highly appreciate their family lineage and old friendships, they love to collect memories and keepsakes. They’ll remember childhood memories, special moments in life, and anything really of the past. If you are ever in a Cancer’s inner circle present or past, expect him/her to be the first to help you out in any time of need. Cancers also love food. They are often emotional comfort eaters with well-stocked fridges and pantries. Their weakness are sweets and cakes. You’ll notice that a good home-cooked meal is what makes a Cancer feel taken care of or re-centered after a long day.
In terms of careers, Cancers tend to change their minds and/or desire creativity. This means they’re hard workers but often drift from job to job as they struggle to find the right work environment. They’re not the best for leadership positions but their caring and empathetic natures make a great team player as long as they’re not micromanaged. Service oriented business, non-profit organizations, or small business where they can tap into their communal and family-oriented ways.
HOW TO GET THE LOOK
Since Cancers are deep and mysterious, I did my best to combine the two vibes with a lightweight eye look and a darker romantic lip. I felt like this brought out the feminine and motherly aura while embracing the moody feels.
NOTE: The base for all of these looks is going to be the same as I’m mainly focusing on the eyes for this lookbook series. The only real change will be the highlighter I use for certain signs. I’ll be skipping the base from now on and going straight to eyes. If you’re curious to see what my base routine is, check it out in my Capricorn post.
The Eyes
Always prime your lids to start. For me, that’s covering my eyelids with foundation. For others, that’s using actual eyeshadow primer. I strictly used the Morphe x Jaclyn Hill The Vault Bling Boss Palette for this look. I dusted Hush Hush in the crease of my eyes and lower lash line, Glitz & Glam over the whole lid, Ballsy in the outer third, and lastly Bling Bling on the center of my lids where the light hits. I blended the rest of this look together so it would almost look like one subtle shade. I added wispy false lashes to romanticize the look.

To tie the look together, I applied Pat McGrath MatteTrance lipstick in Flesh 3 to my lips. This gave the look a romantic moody feel that could be sweet with a smile or dark with a pursed lip or scowl, true to Cancer character.
As for the rest of my face, I kept the contour to a minimum and the brows relatively lighter than I usually do so that the center of focus goes to the heart of the face where all expressions and truths are shown: the triangle running from the eyes to the mouth.
About Astrology: Chiron
Chiron is a little known aspect of our birth charts. It is a comet with a unique erratic orbit. It is named after a centaur in Greek mythology who was a healer and teacher that could not heal himself, ironic huh. Chiron’s symbol is the “wounded healer”. It represents our deepest wound and how we try to heal it. In life, we may over-compensate in these areas of wounds. Because the wound goes deep, and we may work hard to overcome the wound, healing powers are potent.
The sign your Chiron is in tells you your deepest wounds and greatest healing strengths. Based off of this source, I know my Chiron is in Virgo. This means my deepest turmoils stems from my debilitating need for things to be perfect, a distorted image of myself, need to please others, inclination to be excessively critical and judgmental of others, and fear of disorder and germs to the degree of occasional hypochondria episodes (which I can hear my friend laughing all the way from Brooklyn about this last one). However, my healing powers are my ability to create structure out of chaos, improve people’s well-being and lives, ability to be practical and wise, and talent for creating empowering media content (I’ll let you all be the judge of that one because my distorted self-image says otherwise).
Understanding your deepest rooted insecurities and how you heal others is a huge step in understanding yourself and how you can coexist and address these wounds. I need to work on not judging others so harshly for no reason and stop being overly humble to the point of self-deprecation. I also need to continue using my healing powers on not just my friends but myself. What about you?
That closes the Cancer chapter of this series! I’m off to edit my Cartagena travel diary and vlog as fast as I can clear up more space for all those clips (internally screams). Hopefully it will be done by Friday before I head to Morocco for 12 days with my middle school BFFL Amanda! Stay tuned and follow me on Instagram (@bougeandrouge) for all the highlights before that travel diary gets composed.
Until next time, bisou bisou…
